On January 1, 2022, a new law that affects all residents and businesses in California went into effect. Senate Bill 1383 is popularly known as California’s new Composting Bill. While the new bill primarily focuses on carbon and methane gas reduction goals for the state, it establishes targets for reducing organic waste in landfills.
What does this mean for you and how does it affect your businesses?
CA residents can expect a 15% increase in trash bills since their local municipalities will contract out services for food waste.
Businesses can no longer throw food waste into their trash cans or dumpsters and must find alternative means to handle their organic waste. Non-compliance will result in daily fines by Calrecycle.
Violations | Fines |
Minor | $500 to $4,000 per violation per day |
Moderate | $4,000 to $7,500 per violation per day |
Major | $7,500 to $10,000 per violation per day |
For businesses such as restaurants and corporate campuses that generate food scraps and waste as a part of their daily operations, compliance with SB-1383 is a must.
SWA Services Group has decades of experience servicing the Bay Area and understands that there are pros and cons to each type of on site food waste management. Here are several ways that California businesses can comply with SB-1383 based on their industry and facility’s unique needs.
Composting: Perfect with plenty of space and man power. Although this is the most ideal solution, it requires high maintenance and resources.
Dehydrators: Useful for facilities that have access to electricity. Requires no water input but consumes high amounts of energy.
Grinders: Great for businesses with small amounts of organic waste. Not recommended for businesses with dining halls or corporate cafeterias.
Biodigesters: Ideal for facilities that want minimal maintenance and oversight. High up-front costs and may run into roadblocks from local wastewater treatment plants.
Contracting waste hauling services: Minimal effort and oversight. Requires a management service with a clear understanding of laws and regulations and may incur recurring costs.
