We're at a critical time. COVID-19 is still on the rise in many of our communities. California is continuing to take steps to limit the spread of the virus, including promoting the use of masks, closing some indoor activities, and strengthening the approach to social distancing. By following these guidelines, our collective actions will help slow the spread of illness and protect ourselves and each other. Dr. Steve Parodi is an Associate Executive Director at the Permanente Medical Group and an infectious disease specialist; wants all of us to know these facts about the virus:
Some people never develop symptoms or get such mild ones they don't know they're infected. They can still spread the coronavirus to others if they don't take precautions like social distancing and wearing a mask in public.
While some people are at higher risk for serious illness, all people are at risk for infection.
It's hard to know who'll be most affected. Most of the deaths have been among the elderly, but young and healthy people have also become infected with the virus and have developed serious illness or complications. Preventing this disease is important for each and every one of us.
We also know:
The virus spreads through close contact, especially when people are within 6 feet of each other for more than 15 minutes.
When everyone wears masks in public, we greatly reduce the risk of spread.
Washing hands, not touching your face, and staying at least 6 feet from those not in your household also reduces the potential spread.
